The principle of an art car is simple. Generally, a manufacturer contacts an artist and gives him (more or less) full authority to reinterpret one of his models. BMW has mastered this app with creators like Jeff Koons or formerly David Hockney or Roy Lichtenchtein. Simply called ‘Art’, the approach is very different in this Porsche 968 because the German manufacturer is not at the root of the case, even if it quickly joins the movement.
The venture belongs to Arthur Snow. The aptly named, Lebanese-born French is at the origins of the Automobile Art house. His job is to sell rare and expensive cars. Much publicized in the elite segment, counting cream rap or Justin Bieber among his clients, the entrepreneur also launched a clothing line. A lifelong Porsche fan – from age 16 he worked as a car wash at one of the brand’s Paris dealerships – wanted to revisit the Arthur Kar 968. Porsche quickly got the green light, and the company of creator-seller, designer Adrien Leborgne.
An art car highlighting a forgotten design
A year and a half later, at the beginning of October, 968 appeared. The two men turned a convertible into a spider, shortened the windshield, simplified the interior and produced a very special green paint job. If we can justifiably doubt the ingenuity of the work done, on the other hand we can hail the virtue of operation, as the fundamentals of the car’s design are solid, just like the instrument panel. Because it emphasizes the quality of Porsche design in the 80s and 90s.
This rather unpopular line of cars of the Zuffenhausen brand has been the subject of jokes from straight 6 purists, who blame the 924, 944, 968 and 928 for some underpowered engines and front engines for all. But beyond the technical considerations, the Porsche design was one of the purest designs to be found on the automotive planet at the time. The shark-like front profiles fit the rear perfectly while elongating these lines, and this is on all models of those years. Arthur Snow’s attempt to erase several plastic artifacts superimposed on the 968 series sounds very fitting to recall the relevance of the original design of the 968 series, born in 1992. This is perhaps the only quality of this Art Car, but it is already huge. .
