Mercedes is owned by several automakers that offer a variety of pickup trucks under its own logo marketed in its network. This Marco Polo has been around since 1984 but has changed a lot since then. The current versions clearly demand the image of a luxury minivan. On the driving side, we find driving comfort signed by Mercedes. And on the residential side, all the advantages of a perfectly equipped sunroof van.

Presence, elegance, technology and comfort remain the main points of Marco Polo, presented on the basis of Class V.

Marco Polo: three versions, including a real minivan

The German manufacturer offers two lightweight versions of the Marco Polo. These models have a sunroof. But they don’t have kitchens and they don’t meet VASP certification. Therefore, they are subject to ecological malaise.

  • Marco Polo Horizon: Class V 163 hp in automatic transmission (from the basic version).
  • Marco Polo Event: in Vito
  • Marco Polo: 5.14 m long minibus with sunroof, opening seats, fixed kitchen…

The history of Marco Polo: a reference among vans

Mercedes Marco Polo from 1984 based on the T1 van

This model was a panel van when the Marco Polo was introduced in 1984. A tall version based on a Mercedes T1 with a hard extension that even houses a bed. The layout also included a convertible sofa, a kitchen and storage. The Marco Polo later became a compact van based on the Vito in 1996. The Viano arrived in 2002, before the current V-Class arrived in 2014.

Class V: on the road, Mercedes presence

Marco Polo does not deny anything by displaying elitist prices. As clean as a stylish star-studded sedan (ESP, Crosswind Assist, Active Brake Assist, tire pressure control, hill start assist, backup camera, etc.), this luxury camper is marketed for more than €73,200 at 163 horsepower. €75,200 at 190 hp and around € 80,000 at 239 hp each time with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission.

Optional air suspension

Among the technologies associated with the V-Class, the AIRMATIC suspension (optional) offers many advantages: optimum road comfort (reduction of body movements), a constant loading threshold, optimized fuel consumption and air suspension that can be customized for different programs. The driver can thus choose Comfort or Manual mode, in which the suspension is automatically lowered by 10 mm from 110 km/h. Sport mode, on the other hand, allows the Marco Polo to be lowered by 10 mm, even at low speed. Conversely, Lift mode allows the vehicle to be lifted a maximum of 35 mm at a maximum speed of 30 km/h. Suitable depending on the conditions.

Layout: sliding electric seat

Among other things, the Marco Polo is distinguished by the seat with independently and electrically adjustable backrests. To turn it into a double bed, there are pneumatic padding with variable density, among other electric controls. The same row of seats slides into the farthest point of the passenger compartment (behind the two cabin seats) to unload all rear cargo volume to a depth of 180 cm. The kitchen unit on the side integrates perfectly with the hob and fridge-cooler. Elegance is key.

Equipment: good performance

Note that the Marco Polo is one of the most connected vans, with the voice-activated MBUX multimedia system and the MBAC interface to control its various functions via the touchpad or via the smartphone app via Bluetooth. Enough and at your fingertips to control the filling of the water reserve, the battery charge, even adjust the mood lighting from a single interface.

Constant heating remains an option. In addition, the optional (as the sunroof is manual as standard) function of electric opening and closing of the roof can drive the price even higher.
