Family sharing has almost become a tradition at Mercedes. Especially since the development of the compact series. You know, all models derived from Class A. The same goes for the engines, as they share the chassis, chassis and technological elements. It’s the same melody in Stuttgart or in Affalterbach.
Although all Mercedes compact models are equal, some are more equal than others. This is the case with the CLA Shooting Brake. Arguably the most beautiful model of the German entry level. Of course, tastes and colors are not discussed, but it is clear that the AMG processing strengthens the style of this little shooting brake.
Cut-out bumpers, large wheels and quad tailpipes set the tone. However, it’s not just about pumping. Under the hood is one of the world’s most powerful 4-cylinder productions! Only the most powerful version, called the 45 S, is available in the CLA. The 2.0-liter turbo thus produces 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque. Combined with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, this hot blob gets the little German to the 100 km/h mark in 4.0 seconds!
Of course, this amphetamine-fortified block is nothing new. We already had the opportunity to taste it in the GLA 45 S. But this crossover sibling is much more noble than the CLA Shooting Brake. The station wagon experience is much more instinctive, mainly due to the lower driving position.
Efficiency still prevails. With a simple press of the button on the steering wheel, we select the individual mode – for us everything is dynamic, except for the suspensions. In constant driving, the CLA 45 S leaves us speechless. The grip offered by all-wheel drive is limited only by the tires, while the chassis never tire of cornering or reversing. Even when you’re lifting your feet or getting out of a bend, the rear will play nicely thanks to the torque redirection on the rear axle.
As you can see, you don’t get bored of using the CLA 45 S. But there is no complete rest. In everyday driving, the AMG bombinette hides its raw sporting side with as much restraint as an Englishman during a football match. When turned on, the exhaust hums back on the road.
Even though the box keeps the 4 cylinders under 2,500 rpm when left to do its job, there is always some under the pedal. But the most restrictive is that the damping remains very tight regardless of the driving mode. But we can forgive him for this misstep because after all it’s hard to have the performance of a supercar and the comfort of a Rolls…
Priced at €74,199, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ Shooting Brake – to use its full name – is not only at the top of the CLA lineup, but also at the top of Mercedes’ compact lineup. Certainly, the bill is salty but this amphetamine-filled shooting brake offers a combination of performance, dynamism and livability that none can match…
