One of the last representatives of the pure and tough little GTi, the Ford Fiesta ST competes with the Hyundai I20 N for a sporty head-to-head.
Reasons to choose the Fiesta ST…
The worthy heir of yesterday’s little GTiThis restyled Fiesta ST is small, light – or at least not too heavy – efficient, efficient and, above all, fun. Short, is for the pleasure of driving. Her small “boiler”, 3-cylinder (one of which is deactivated at part load), delivers 200 hp and above all a powerful torque of 290 NmFrom 1,600 rpm – rising to 320 Nm on the occasion of the upcoming restyling. Values achieved thanks to low inertia turbo, variable timing and direct and indirect double injection. What combines flexibility and usability at all speeds (6500rpm only…) without being reluctant to climb up the switch quickly.
VIDEO – Our comparison of roads in Lorraine
This small block, which is quite unpretentious, manages to wipe out the clicking noise typical of 3 cylinders thanks to its active exhaust valve system.muffled and sporty voiceIt proves to be extremely efficient. 0 to 100 km/h shipped with 6”5 and a top speed of 232 km/h. With him Quaife limited-slip differential (an option billed at €950…)Combined with “torque vectoring” torque management and Michelin Pilot Sport4, it is almost impossible to have a fault in the traction of the engine front axle. However the strong point of this little Ford remains its chassis. The sport is the most direct steering in the range of Fords (less than two turns lock-to-lock) and is reasonably calibrated and supported by multi-stage damping – less severe for the vertebrae than the i20’s – Tenneco shock absorbers, bi-tube in the front, that ST rigor and dynamism. It is also intuitive to use, with a rear axle that can easily corner or become mobile on demand.. In extreme cases, simply manage the raising of the foot at the corner entrance to control the almost propulsion-like slip!
On hairpins, this delights the ST rider even with a little leg lift. To take full advantage of this dynamism, it is recommended to use Sport mode among the three available modes (Standard, Sport and Track).non-slip ESC – fully detachable – never be intrusive. Add to this the braking that we never fail to do and a very reasonable average fuel consumption of less than 10 l/100 km. Finally, thanks to its acceptable comfort and adaptability, this Fiesta (3 or 5 doors for the same price) can be used daily.
… or opting for the i20 N
Ford is remarkable, but Hyundai appeals to your senses more. Start with hearing. In sports mode, the “one thousand six hundred” hiss, slap, live, even if the raging sound is secretly amplified by the speakers. When downshifting, the electronics provide a nice throttle boost that simulates your heel-toe as standard. This compensates for the mediocrity of the pedals – Ford is as bad as the Korean here – not quite suitable for dancing panards. We console ourselves with the right hand: flexible and sensitive, The i20’s 6-speed manual transmission control is equivalent to its counterpart. But none can rival the error-free locking of a Honda Civic Type R.
In the endless variety of Lorraine bends, the Korean drives more powerfully than the Fiesta.. The front axle is more direct, the rear axle follows it, more screwy: the Pirelli PZero never lacks grip at the entrance, and the ESP, completely disconnected in both cars, does not appear until the very last moment. First of all, the driving i20 is excellent from the top. Hyundai, in particular, is (slightly) better at acceleration than Ford, reporting fewer draws and shorter intermediates in three-tenths of a second, thanks to a more weight-covered difference from 0 to 100 km/h – 90 kg.
Self-locking is standard here, just like the active regulator and Matrix LED lights. Hyundai widens the gap in the vehicle. First, ergonomics: pilot slides lower in perfect bucket seatsThis is far from Ford’s “single pacifier” position. Meanwhile, the city car with the blue oval is preparing to lose the Recaro seats, which Ford Performance has replaced. Finish is mediocre on these two GTIs – we have the right not to worry about that. However, the i20 N offers a more modern and sporty presentation with controls on the steering wheel, a more responsive infotainment system, and the G, configurable digital instrumentation rich in temperatures and pressures. The machine even warns you that a curve with high potential for “fun” (!) is approaching. Finally, drink korean Made in Turkey bigger about ten centimeters from its blue oval counterpart, it prefers daily use.
And the scenery in all this? Scarlet rocker panels, sky blue paint, black 18” wheels, hood and rear spoiler: Hyundai also takes on its relationship with the Rally2 versionalready competitive. The brand has big targets in this market of 500 vehicles per year, which has so far been dominated by the Skoda Fabia Evo. As standard, the i20 N offers very good taste.
don’t notice
Victory in points for Hyundai, but equality in our hearts with a sportier i20 and a more versatile Fiesta. It’s a matter of taste.
